Originally, I was going to post one of those quiz things where you mark the things you've done and haven't done in your lifetime like this one here---> [link]
I was going to see and send how many stupid things I have done....

But I realised something...
These things on the list aren't nearly as stupid as the things we all do everyday.
The list should be changed, and have things like:

(x) Consumed more than you should have
(x) Bought stuff that's totally useless
(x) Wasted water / energy
(x) Contributed to a vicious cycle
( ) Did something to stop it.

I think the stupidest thing is not spreading this video... [link]

I figured, who wants to read some endless list about the things I've done. It would serve as a good laugh, but it has no point.

So I'm spreading this instead... I urge people to watch this... clear 20 mins of your busy schedule and watch! It's something we should all spread round.

You're right, it is interesting.

However some of her ideas I can't agree with, and some was just factually incorrect.

BFRs are not toxic. While they're produced sythetically (as many things are), there's no suggestion that they're toxic.

She says there are loads of toxic chemicals in our consumer-packaged goods, but it's just not true. If they were toxic, they'd never be allowed to sell - it's illegal. They have to test their products for this stuff all the time.

And by the way... planned obsolescence is NOT another word for "Designed for the dump". It's a method companies use to make more money.

Regarding her computers analogy about it... well this is simply due to advances in technology, not just because of planned obsolescence.

==

It's a pity, because I wanted to like this video, and in fact it's not terrible. But the fact that she didn't mention ONE method to support her plan suggests she hasn't got it all figured out.

I'm sorry to be such a cynic, in the end I'm one of the biggest environmentalists I know, but that video just wasn't very well done.

well... you'de be surprised how many people still sell illegal stuff.... believe me... if you looked in the right place... you'll find the products she's mentioning. Some products are even known for being toxic and are being discovered now. :(

as for planned obsolescence, isn't it just as bad if it's designed to make more money and not to make people happier?

I agree with you about your first point - totally. However more toxins are released daily from... guess where.... Maghtab.

Kids born and raised around the landfill often become handicapped or retarded. That's something which we really need to take care of; what do you think?

Yeah, it IS designed to make money, but not necessarily make people unhappy.

As a marketing student, I know that planned obsolescence is a key strategy to help sell the new product.

Without it, companies like Apple and Microsoft which both brought us wonderful products would go bust, especially Apple.

Just take a look at the iPod. It's the best-selling digital device (of any kind) of all time, yet there must be at least 6 improvements on the original.

Now we look at Windows. When Vista first came out, they had to remove a lot of features which they had originally promised. This was because today's technology just isn't mature enough. As a result Windows Vista will be obsolete in late 2009 when the new version (Windows 7 codename Vienna) will be out.

There are few products today that aren't planned to be obsolete in a few years. One such example is Coca-cola — and that's only because they sell millions yearly. The enormous original 5GB iPod wouldn't be so hot in 2008, but Coca-Cola still sells like hot-cakes.

If companies don't plan for their products to be obsolete, we'll never have a choice what to buy, and prices would skyrocket since there'll be no new competitors, and finally, technology will be much behind since there will be no need to develop new products.

That's about it. Thanks for reading! :)

well of course the trash is a problem... I agree that it is.... But we have a hell of a lot of "metaphorical" retards here in Malta that do SHIT about it.

I know SOOOO many people that say "xix? x'nghamel? noqod immur nitfa iz-zibel il bring in sites? Uxe... mandix x'nghamel... bizzejjed mandix hin." .........

And then they expect to have better air. I mean PLEASE!

And as for planned obsolescence... I think it's just another way of corrupting the world...

You mentioned Apple and Microsoft...right? Then please explain why Linux is so successful, when all the products are FREE. Yes... that's right... software that is not only Better than both Apple and Microsoft, but it's also FREE.

They even ship products free of charge.... why? Cause they DON'T screw people into buying the stuff cause it's "Modern Technology" and cause they provide good service that people want. Therefore planned obsolescence is totally useless in a case like this.

Also... did you know that all Apple products, most commonly the iPod and the iPhone are frikken energy suckers? I mean seriously... they waste more energy than any other household device. And while we're on the subject... did you know the iPhone battery has to be changed after 8 months cause it'll stop working? Or that Macs are known to waste at least 3/4 more than Pc's?

My point is... planned obsolescence is just another way of brainwashing people into wanting new stuff for no reason. It's a way to take advantage of the world's dying recourses for MONEY... and alternative methods are ignored.

Now you tell me... Is a computer with 9gig Ram, 4 graphic cards and a 3 Terra byte hard disk really that useful? No game ever invented needs such a machine, yet Microsoft promote this kind of thing.... and who knows when it's going to be obsolete... I'm willing to bet that it'll take less than a year.

Don't get me wrong... I'm not saying other software distributers like Linux don't waste, but they waste less... a LOT less... and try to make things better.
